Yep, that's the sum of his life before you got him. Dogs and cats react to sounds, but the video looks like a 2 dimensional thing to them, stuff moving but they can't see what it is because it lacks the depth. He'll come around, you'll find things that he clicks to and those will become his thing, but those kinds of breeds are really pretty much a single thing they kinda specialize in. Greyhounds are close to Pharo hounds, they go back to the pyramid times, guard dogs, ornamental dogs that just sit. I've worked with a couple of them and they are not like other dogs, but give them a mission so to speak and they latch on to it. Once they figure it out, it becomes really easy for them to adapt to different things. Although they were bred to do the one thing as guard dogs, they can and do pick up on a variety of things. He adopts you and he'll be the best guard dog ever, especially if he see's you being threatened, they can be pretty scary looking. One of the reasons people have a hard time with them, they want a dog, but they get the terminator instead. But the levels of affection are huge, they just don't do much until they know what it is that is Ok for them to do. Play time is sometimes getting on their level and playing, literally on their level, until they start to adapt to their environment, which is you.

They're definitely different. I read about that when I was researching them before we decided on adopting one... but I couldn't appreciate just how different they are until we had one. You have to teach them everything. Literally. You're right about them doing nothing at all until they know it's okay. I've never had a dog like that.. even shy dogs still do things. They're just more shy about it. Odin does nothing until explicitly told that each thing is okay. We got him a bed, and we refused to step on it. Even trying to guide him over to it, he'd jump over it and not even put one paw on it because he thought he wasn't allowed. So I had to teach him that he's allowed, by putting it in his crate for a few days. Now I can't get him off of it most of the time because it's his favorite. But... he still won't use anything else unless I actually go out of my way to teach him that yes, it's his, and he's allowed to use it. Usually by putting it in his crate because he understands that's his stuff. Then he gets it. Otherwise, he'd probably just be a statue and do literally nothing. That's what he was like the first couple months. A robot dog... standing around not knowing what to do with himself. Waiting to be told what he should be doing. The upside is, he house trained extremely fast. One accident, despite being 5 and having never been in a house before in his life. And... he is pretty funny when he shows little bits of his personality. I think we still have a while before we get to see his full personality, though.

You can easily teach him to sit by a chair or something especially if you are sitting in it, they can be really good at staying in one spot when you tell them to. At least the Pharo hounds I worked with would do that, a collar and the sit command with an upwards tug on a leash gets their attention and if you are gentle, they seem to understand that you are telling them something. They are a very smart breed, they are aware of everything going on around them, things out of place can be baffling to downright scary for them. He's probably very attached to you by now, and wants to do the right thing, just needs a little encouragement, the light tug thing worked for me. Have you had he loose in tall grass yet? They look like deer leaping through it, instead of just walking through. It's hilarious to see. I literally sat with them, at their level, head heights about the same and they responded to that, seemed to show themselves more, and will play if you can get them to like move if you move suddenly while doing that, then back away so they know it's a game. I had mine play catch and then had to catch them, and they would stop so you could, like they wanted their turn. But fetching a ball is just beyond them, I couldn't get them to do anything like that, but the one on one games they would, like bark a certain way, tell them to lay down and they would, but head up only so they could keep an eye on things. But the sit next to you, when you stop walking them on a leash is like second nature, and then getting them to do it by a chair or something, and then the lay down command and they will be there all day until you tell them they can get up, usually breaktime for them. But mine would even do that in a mininvan, sit right there and be the guard dog, but they did like looking out the window, but stayed right next to me. Once you do get more of the personality out of them, you get used to the little cues they give you, a look, a way of holding their head, stuff like that. I really liked them for pets, but they were rescue dogs and eventually went to an owner, but the few months that they were around was a lot of fun. I had chores and other animals to take care of and they kinda acted like the guard dog for them, didn't get them playing and tried to stop them only to have them try to get them to play with them, and once they figured it out, they went into a fun kind of trying to always be the winner sort of. There were times of having to yell at them to stop, they would get too rough at times. But they definitely have personalities, just have to bring them out of them, get them to a place where they felt safe doing some things on their own. But the guard dog thing was theirs and it's like they have this attitude of being who they are doing it.

Kind of cute story, since everyone seems to be having a hard time right now. (Including myself) and Ativan mentioned wanting to see more of Odin.. We normally feed him pretty early. Since hubby works almost every day, and I feed him right after hubby leaves for work in the mornings, so around 6am. While hubby was sick though, he stayed home and we slept in. One of those mornings I woke up because Odin's stomach was growling.. he's not used to eating that late. So I got up to give him a little food to tie him over until we woke up. And since I'm lazy, I just put it on the floor for him and showed him where it was, then went to the bathroom. When I came back out, he was back in his crate and the food was still on the floor. Poor boy thought he wasn't supposed to eat it since it was on the floor, and not in his bowl. So instead of waking my mom up by going out to the living room to get his bowl, I had to feed him out of my hand because he wouldn't believe me that it was okay to eat something I put on the floor for him. He tries.

I can never get good video. By the time I start recording, no one is running or anything anymore.
But, here are most of the dogs from today. A few more showed up after this, but... it's pretty cool to be around so many.
Odin is only in this one for a second. Lol. He likes to go stand next to the other people hoping for attention. Or, sometimes he'll chase after one of the other dogs if they start running. He never starts running first... lazy dog.

One more.... with Odin in it, for Ativan. Odin doing what he does best... running up to people for attention and almost knocking them over. I lost count of how many times daily he swings his body into me and almost knocks me down. It's funny seeing him do it to other people. But... that big white one in the last video, with the red collar, was there last time we went too and ran full speed into Troy and took his feet out from under him so I guess Odin isn't the only one that likes to do that to people.

We were bad, today. Well... not EXTREMELY bad. But we've both been wanting a small pet for a while, now. Something to be mostly kept in a cage. Hubby's been wanting rats. But, the bigger the animal the more space it needs. Lately we've been watching videos on YouTube while we eat dinner because we don't have a TV or anything, and we canceled our Netflix because we hardly use it. So a lot of the stuff we've been watching is people doing creative things... making all sorts of different stuff. From painting, to clay, to building things out of wood, or whatever. Hubby found one a few weeks ago of someone making some really cool things for their hamster. And he's been wanting a hamster since then. Hamsters are cheap and take up virtually no space... especially dwarf ones. And hubby wants to build small things for one, to make a cool cage. So... Meet Charlie. I haven't checked to see what sex it is yet, and we're in bed now. But it's a Russian dwarf hamster. And, it's cute. And blue. And so tiny and fat. And it's going to get cool things.

Has that Putin kinda stare Omg. It's friendly, though. ... so far. It let me pick it up pretty easily and I was petting it earlier and it was fine with that. The one I had when I was younger would bite me whenever I put my hand in her cage... but, I did some research before getting this one so I think I understand why now. This one has a nice big place to live in. And it will have sand for bathing, and we have a nice-sized hamster wheel coming in. And, it will also have lots of bedding to burrow in. So it shouldn't end up being angry. Plus it will have whatever houses hubby wants to make for it. Probably a whole little hamster town. LOL. It will be a spoiled little shit. Just like Odin and the cats.

Tried to look him over. Pretty sure he's a male. Also, kale seems to be his favorite thing in the whole world. I also have to share a pic of Peaches I took today. Hubby wanted me to send him pics of everyone while he was on lunch break, and Peaches looks so happy in this one... like she's smiling.

I tried to get some good shots of his coloring, because it's so nice. It's hard to do, though. But he has some blue, with tan markings and a white belly. Still waiting for his wheel to get here. It's supposed to be here tomorrow... then he'll be all set up.

Well, Charlie's wheel came in. (I can hear him using it right now, actually.) Now all we need to do is get the lid figured out, so we can add more bedding for him to burrow in. But aside from that, he's pretty much set up... and has been enjoying his fresh vegetables that he gets. Next, hubby can start making things for him. And Odin went out with us today, and we got him a valentine's day toy, which he played and snuggled with when we got home. He also got a treat, and his usual attention from strangers. So he had a good day, too.

Last one of Charlie for a while, I swear. But I got a better pic of his cage. I'm actually kind of enjoying having a hamster. We started looking up ideas for diy houses and stuff for him today. This is kind of calming and peaceful. Like having a fish tank, but cheaper and less maintenance.
