So, I don't think that this has been done. But, since I don't want to clog up/take over other threads with pictures of Odin, I figured I'd start a pet thread! Pets can be very therapeutic for people. (Or, for people who like animals, at least. I know not everyone is interested in them.) So, post about yours! I'll start, I guess, with some more pics of Odin since some of you seem to like seeing him. Here's a link to an album of pics from today. www.imgur.com/gallery/po5QEAlso, I found out that his birthday is actually the day after we adopted him. So he literally just turned 5, on Monday. And we finally went to go watch replays of his races. He was fast!! He won a lot, and came in second almost as often. He won the most races out of all of his siblings, and had the best rank, too. Hard to believe, considering how lazy and laid back he is now. He sleeps all day! And walks nice and slow on the leash. You can see his races here (race name Michelangelo): www.trackinfo.com/dog.jsp?runnername=MICHELANGELOYou have to be on a computer to watch them, though. They won't work on a phone. I think it's pretty cool that the rescue gave us all of these papers with info on him, like his family tree and where to find replays of his races, and how many races he and his siblings have been in, and where, and all of that. We get to know who he was before we knew him. You don't normally get that much info with a rescue pet. There's even places you can register to see if you can find the people who adopted other dogs in his family, so you can maybe find his siblings. And, we got a piece of paper with his previous owners name on it and how to get contact info in case you have questions about him, I guess. Anyway, we took him down to the pond today. First time we've been out there, since the horses have to get used to him first or they'll trample us. They seemed fine with him today. Tomorrow, we'll take him to the big park in Charlotte that we really like. People always have their dogs there.

Went to the vet yesterday to go ahead and get his heartworm prevention, even though his next one isn't due until the 15th. Then we went down to the pond for a little bit. He's slowly learning how to be a pet. He played with his toy for a little bit the other morning, and he's been wagging his tail more often. Slowly starting to look less nervous and depressed all the time. He responds to his name now, too. I saw some other people say that it took their greyhound months before they started playing with toys, and things like that. So Odin is doing pretty well by comparison. His companionship has totally been worth everything we did to save up for his adoption fee. When I put the leash on him, he will follow me anywhere and stand right next to me. So I can take him all over with me and he doesn't get in the way or cause problems. I even take him out to the barn to do laundry... carrying the big laundry basket... and don't have to worry about him tripping me up or pulling on the leash and making me drop clothes. He walks perfect. It definitely cheers me up to have that. Plus, he's cute. And he loves attention and will put his head in my lap, or lean on me while we're standing around. He still has some adjusting to do... he's still a little nervous in general. But he's coming along really well so far.

More Odin! For some positive thoughs. We took him to the dog park on Saturday. He was a little nervous, but seemed to enjoy being around other dogs. I'm sure it felt familiar, even if they weren't greyhounds. He was even pretty responsive when we called him, despite only having him for two weeks and we haven't taught him anything except for his name yet. There was a Petco on the way to the park, so we also stopped by there. He picked himself out a tennis ball... and he actually plays with it! That's the first time I've seen him play since we brought him home. I guess he's a tennis ball dog. That's fine.. tennis balls are cheap. Also, he takes up the entire back seat of our car.

On a more positive note again.. some pictures from today. Took Odin out into the pasture for a longer walk (most of the property is pasture), now that my toe isn't hurting and it wasn't too hot out. He enjoyed most of it.. but my mom's horses still make him nervous. I don't blame him, they can be buttholes sometimes! But today, I think all they wanted to do was sniff him. Still, I chased them off when they got too close to him. Also I've realized that I've kind of lost my sense of self since the car accident. I feel like I don't have much of an identity anymore. Like I'm just some fleshy blob wandering around aimlessly. But at least I've figured out why I feel this way, so now I can start to fix it!

Still, I chased them off when they got too close to him. Yah, they can come up looking like they are just wanting to sniff, but if they are nervous, scared, anything like that, they might claim dominance by kicking, totally a horse thing to do. Let them smell him while he is on the other side of the fence. Let the dominant one do it first, if that horse acts like it's not a big deal and goes back to eating, then the others will take their turn and go eat, it's pretty much a done deal if they go eat, do the grazing thing. That's the sign they use, even if it is just dirt, they will put their heads down and wander a little, it's the submissive sign. This is more dangerous if they are prone to kicking, but you can walk out and turn your back to them, Odin as well, and turn your head slightly so you can just barely see them out of the corner of your eye, about 45 degrees. Let them walk up, they will, very slowly and if it goes well, they will 'nose' you ever so slightly, maybe more. They will do the same thing to Odin. Once they do, you can acknowledge that they are there, but don't do that before. The touch is their way of saying that you can be in the pasture. Wild stallions play that game, so do the lead Mares. If someone new comes up, they turn and wait for the new to walk up to them, dominance kind of thing. Works almost all the time, but not always. If the dominant horse is a real butthead, then they might play other games to show you up. Horses are very good at turning the tables on you, I think for them it's a fun thing to do, they don't realize they are ten times the size. Which is weird, because a dominant mini horse can be the Queen of the pasture, they just have to show that they can, I've seen it, funny as can be, a little horse no taller than 30 inches at the shoulder bossing around the herd that are four, five feet high or more and out weigh them by ten to one. Or you can bring a little sweet feed with, a couple handfuls and give them a treat if they are good, sweet feed is like heroin for horses, they will associate Odin with a treat, but just do it the one time, otherwise they expect it and can either be disappointed or pissed if they don't get it. Horse games...

Horse games... Yeah, our dominant one is a giant butthole. And so is one of the other ones. My mom spoils them, so they do what they want. She says she doesn't want to tell them "no" because she doesn't want to be the "mean one" so they walk all over her.. literally. Taking treats is a bad idea with them... gets them more excited. My step dad got bit by one, once, for giving out treats out there. LOL. Now we only give treats through the gate. But I suppose doing it that way could work too, if I brought Odin to the gate and treated them? But, I do want to be able to walk in the pasture, since that's the best/only safe place to walk Odin around here. (No sidewalks, and the road is small with lots of blind spots and people that like to speed through occasionally)

Odin is gorgeous!
I have a couple gerbils, Mochi (albino) and Jellybean (Burmese coloring). I've had them for close to three years now, so they're getting older.
Jellybean is pretty laid back. I can pick him up and carry him around, and he seems to like the attention.
Mochi does not like to be touched, does not like to be picked up, does not like enclosed spaces. So tank cleaning days are especially fun... (He seems to have gotten a little calmer after I had to give him antibiotics for two weeks, and he had to be picked up twice a day).
They're both total sweethearts, but in different ways.

Do you have pics of your gerbils? They sound pretty. I've never had a gerbil, but I did have a fluffy black hamster in high school. I was able to get her to ride around on my shoulder. We also have two cats right now. A mom and daughter. (Both spayed now) The mom is more social and needy, the daughter is more of a spaz and doesn't know how to play nice. We have her pretty much because no one else wanted to deal with her. Basically, my mom started feeding a couple strays in the barn a few years ago. Then they multipied.. when we moved up here in the spring last year, there were about 30 and they all had kittens again. We took in Garnet because she was the first to have kittens. We kept her, and gave that set of kittens to a rescue. Then we had a couple rescues help us out with funds and everything to get the rest fixed. Peaches was one of Garnet's kittens from the year before. She was pregnant too, so we handed her off to a rescue along with a couple others. (Until they couldn't take anymore) All found a home, but Peaches got returned so much for biting, the rescue contacted us to ask if we'd take her back after they ran out of foster homes to put her in. LOL. So instead of putting her back outside, we just kept her. There are still about 20 or so living outside... a handful are friendly, the rest feral. Odin is very gentle with all of them though, which I'm glad for.

I haven't seen one like Jellybean before. You must have gotten them from a breeder, vs a pet store? Pet store ones always look the same. Yep, that's Garnet in my avatar. Peaches is a fluffy orange.

I wish I could have gone to a breeder, but there aren't many around me. I did a happy dance in the pet store when I saw Jellybean's coloring though; you're right-- you don't see that often. Your cats are adorable

Horney male, but, what else ya gunna do? Not much on yhe cage, dog some holes, tear ip cardboard tunes. I used to love my gerbils. But i hsd nightmares for decades about gorgetting to feed and water them. Cat got so frustrated one night that it climbed on top of the cage and peed on them. Fun pets, gerbiles. Cute little things, running in their little wheels.
