OK so I really don't know. But I will say, why slash up a work of art? I would never take a knife to The Mona Lisa, so why take a blade to yourself? I have scars, one on my right knee and one from a burn on my inner right forearm. Both hurt and on the knee I cried. The forearm, I had to be man and suck it up and drive on(UGHH). I'm too much of a wuss to cut. Even needles and taking blood I can't watch. OK, so I'm a wuss. I have a family member that used to cut.

there are ways of making cutting into art.
i don't mind the scars by the way. i find them really pretty usually. but it hurts to know that someone feels pain that can only be relieved through self harm. it doesn't seem right, and i don't like it when a friend hurts.

Yeah if you are doing it as a work of art like tattoos then I don't think anything is wrong with it. It just hurts me to think that others hurt so bad that they have to ease it with physical pain. I don't really know and maybe should not even reply about the cutting because I am way too much of a wuss to cut. But self destructive behavior is no stranger to me.

i'm not really sure it's about the pain. i know much better ways of causing serious pain. those who cut often want to see the blood, feel how losing blood makes them dizzy. things that prove they're mortal, probably. i don't understand it very well, but that's what it seems like to me.
i can't cut myself, mostly because i don't want anyone to look at me and feel sorry for the wrong reasons. and also because self inflicted scars without any good plan just seems pointless. i like patterns, so if i am to cut, i'll have to decide on a pattern first. impulsive cutting won't work for me.
but i don't discriminate much between scars. self inflicted or not, most look nice. really weirdly nice, enough that it's difficult to not stare. only little kids don't look better with scars.

I wouldn't mind getting a scarification piece done.
At the moment I want to cut just because I want to cut. When it gets dark the reasons for cutting get darker.

About the scars, it seems like they carry stories with them. Some are rather interesting. Mine are just plain ol clumsiness though. definately no interesting stories there.

It is often different. And no, it isn't about the pain for me, or not entirely. The whole snap an elastic band thing or whatever always seemed so dumb to me. For me, it's partly the self-destruction itself, my hatred for myself expressed on my body in a really physical way. Partly it helps me feel more in control, particularly because being trans and disabled made my body feel kind of out of control sometimes. Partly it's just really calming, focusing. You have to be careful with cutting. Precise. It takes your concentration away from other things--in some ways I think cutting kept me breathing, kept me from killing myself more than once, stilled those feelings for a while. And then there is just the straight up chemical side. Cutting releases endorphins, so it can make you feel really good. That is partly the addiction thing. Knowing how good it can make you feel. I actually started off punching a wall until my knuckles bled, I moved on to cutting from that. Talking about it makes me want it. But I have reasons not to. I have nearly a year without doing it, I have a partner who will be super upset, I'd have scars to hide... etc. It just isn't worth the cost, I don't want it enough for that. Generally when I cut it's because I'm overwhelmed.

My knuckles have huge scars from teeth when inconsiderate people had their mouths opened as I was serving up knuckle sandwiches back in my 20's. They were stupid self inflicted wounds and I also have arthritis from those injuries so that I can't completely close my hands at times. Dum-de-dum-dumb!

I stopped punching walls because I believe I broke a knuckle. never went to the doctor but didn't want to keep damaging myself that way and when I did punch walls after the knuckle would be badly impacted. Also, I never wanted anyone to see.
I have been anorexic. I have self-injured in too many ways to name. my body is covered with scars. not just my arms.
I'm more like Sarah. It's usually about stopping the feelings and thoughts. Sometimes it is about the pain, but then it's a need to punish myself.
hmm.. I will stop here before I get too dark. I just wanted you to know you aren't alone

Had a big anger problem afterward drank too much hanging out in my favorite watering hole, had a Jeckyll & Hyde personality and bounced off a lot of barroom floors taking on the other guys before I wised up. I consider all that a closed chapter from a former lifetime.

Close shaves with disaster have the benefit of reminding us just how good it is to be alive, and that we are the fortunate ones who have survived often through the sacrifice of others. safe travels aisla

Yes, and in retrospect we can get the feeling that The Big Kahuna was watching over us and had plans for us other than utter destruction, otherwise I should have been dead long ago.

worst self harm i do is eating too much chocolate. sugar is seriously addictive, but really helps when i'm in a bad mood.
i have only a few barely visible scars. don't think i played less than other kids, i just never managed to fall head first when i tipped my bike.

I get an occasional yen for chocolate and will consume and entire pound at one time and wonder why I suddenly have a headache.
