(Hoping this is the right area for this topic) So I'm wanting to be more out about my feminine side, and to that end, I plan on getting some femme clothing. Problem is, having worn all men's clothing my whole life, how does one transition (pardon the pun) to women's dress sizes, as well as actually going into the store looking like a guy and picking out articles of clothing? To the best of my knowledge, there's no nearby (St. Louis area) clothing stores that serve a trans/crossdressing clientele, so I don't think that's an option. Is there a "best" way of going about this, or should I just stick to online and hope whatever I pick actually looks right?

The more you go out and dare the shopping, the more comfortable it gets. You can always say your are buying a gift for someone. But after a while, we just don't care....
On line can be cool for hard to get stuff and for lingerie though. I do that.
I go into the shops andro mode. Some time I'll go in there as a woman and relax into it. But my comfort zone is andro or male when buying womans things.
Size charts you gotta google. I dont even know my dress size. Girls sizes are generally a size more than you are. And googling bra sizes will tell you what each vendor does, they are all different.
I hope this helps a little.
Oh and thrift stores are kinda like heaven...

I moved your thread to Social as it's about clothes, social aspect of presentation and gender expression~ I think it's important to remember that both male and female sizes (and fitting) will vary from store to store, brand to brand so you may have to look around. IMHO, I think it is better to go in-store, perhaps with a female friend if you are worried about judgemental attitudes or stares but most people don't care anyway, they are more involved in what they are doing than what other people are doing. If you go by yourself, it can be anxiety-inducing but rest assured, there are indeed guys who buy things for their girlfriend. That's most conclusions people will come to. Most stores allow you to purchase clothing, take it home and try it on, if it doesn't fit and the tags are still attached, you can take it back and either get a bigger or smaller size. This worked for me in the past! Once you get an idea what clothes sizes you generally fit, you will be able to feel confident shopping online. One thing to keep in mind, I've noticed in Australia at least, is that stores won't allow you to refund lingerie or things like that because of hygiene issues. For example, my woman clothing size I wear is roughly 16-18. I brought a oversized sweater on eBay from China (bad mistake) and I ordered XL (size 18-20) to make sure it'd fit me without a doubt. Unfortunately, China makes their standard clothing sizes to fit Chinese women who are very petite. It was a disaster, it didn't fit me properly at all, the fabric wasn't the same wooly-appearance or even thick like it looked in the picture and I was SO depressed because I was looking forward to wearing it. I brought my first skirt online, it was a size 16 on eBay from the UK, it showed the waist measurement and it was something like 38-42 inch which is perfect and it fit perfectly too! I can't praise eBay enough haha. (It doesn't mention Australia but it's OK because UK and Australia are the same.) As for bras, if you want to go there, what brand clothing fits you is the size of the band, for example, if 16 size clothes fit you, it will be 16 band. However, that's not suitable for me as 16 are only available in 16 C cup upwards, so I drop down to 14 so that I can get a 14B cup bra. I prefer A cup since I'm flat but they are scarce because society doesn't seem to care much for flat-chested folks who want to feel sexy in lingerie, dammit! Then again, the flat-chested girls I used to know, they would wear a wirefree sports bra and be good as gold. This is how it's done in Australia though, it may be entirely different in America or other countries, I think they may rely on Bust (inches) like in the above table? So like 32B, 34C or something like that. Regarding St. Louis area, I found a TG website that mentions all areas in St. Louis that are safe to shop at and also nightlife areas that are friendly or to avoid due to having transphobic bigots. It seems extensive and helpful! MallsGalleria Mid Rivers Jamestown Northwest Plaza West County (Westfield) Chesterfield Crestwood ClothingBra's Ann's Bra and Lingerie shop 314-878-2688 Charlette Rosse* V Generation DEB CheapTRX 3211 South Grand* Gormans Value City Fashion City * Galleria - Express * Galleria - Victoria Secret Galleria - Eddie Bauer Macy's St. Louis Centre Victoria's Secret Frederick's of Hollywood Express Nordstrom's* * the asterisk means that employees were especially helpful. Hope this helps! Now go forth and enjoy shopping for a new you!

For me, when starting out, large discount stores like Target and Walmart were easier. You can buy a bunch of groceries and cleaning supplies, etc, you actually need, and throw in one or two items of women's clothing. The cashier doesn't know it's for you or for your wife that went to the bathroom or whatever. They very rarely will make any comments, anyway.Nowadays, I just buy whatever I want wherever, my main problem now is I want to buy everything in the whole mall.

I used to be so apprehensive about buying what I like from the women's side of the store, always self conscious like I was buying something illegal, lol.. But after a few shopping trips (and not being arrested) ha-ha, I started really enjoy shopping, and now it's a favorite thing to do. I don't wear skirts and dresses being nb, but love the shoes and scarves, accessories, makeup, cosmetics, jewelry etc. I know my female sizes though, just tried a few things on and wrote down the sizes even though I didn't buy anything, so now I can freely shop online and get anything I want from home, especially second hand clothes on eBay, etc. Bottom line, its like everything we love in life, the first time is always uncomfortable, but it gets easy very fast, and becomes an awesome thing to do..!

I myself would loves to go out shopping more for myself more as well! And like you said I don't even know my size in women's either. I tend to shop at Hot Topic, for fishnet stockings a lot and other stockings haha! Last time I went to Hot Topic, I saw beautiful dresses I sooo wanted to try on, but I didn't have the nerves to, or funds haha. I did meet a trans woman at a bar one night and we exchanged numbers, and she offered to take me to Plato's Closet to try stuff on because she knew the girls there and said it'd be safe. Sadly I haven't heard from her in awhile. But I definitely know I too as well would love to get courage to start shopping, and wearing more feminine stuff as well. But my damn budget gets in way >_>

Valerie, I know how you feel! I saw one of my classmates wear this really cool biker jacker that was feminine-style, like the bottom of the jacket stopped mid-waist instead of down to hip area like many men's jackets are.
I saw her walk into a fashion store the other day with another classmate I knew, it was Dotti. And out of curiosity, I checked the online website to see if they stocked the jacket she wears and they do! So tempting haha but it's a fashion store for petite females so I would have to lose weight to fit into that jacket!

Early into it I stepped into a GAP store and told one of the girls that I wanted to try on women's jeans, she got another girl and the two of them took turns bringing me different brands until I hit on the right ones. They were not only helpful, but friendly and very chatty. It occurred to me then that they are there to make sales not judgments and they do their best to make customers feel comfortable in the process.
A trans woman I know that lives close by wanted to use the women's fitting room at Macy's and ran afoul of one judgmental old biddy that was on duty that day. My friend wrote a letter to customer service and that women is no longer in sales. Macy's then issued a blanket statement to it's sales staff reminding them that they are there to assist in sales and that gender discrimination of any kind would not be tolerated.

So I thought I would throw some real life experience into this. My wife and I went out shopping yesterday. When I go out with her, it is usually as a male or as an androgynous male presentation. Presentations play into this so let me describe it. And the feelings that go with it. This by the way is why I identify as nonbinary as opposed to binary transsexual. I'm one of those who lives in two worlds...maybe three. So- presentationally, my knee length boots are under my female flair jeans, as usual everything underneath is as always, unlined bra, tap pants, panties and a nylon cami, thats always there ( sheesh way too much info but hey, rigorous honesty helps folks understand this stuff), mens flannel shirt, leather necklace with a Florida Seashell I always wear, my gorgeous trans ring, black leather jacket and hair kinda all over the place, very androgynous. Very comfortable social place for me, no acts, nothing, just totally me. Very whole. Meanwhile my hormone levels are sailing up about 200 points and I am shifting as a result. I watch what I say at peaks and valleys. They are probably around 275 to 350 right this sec. I am full transition hormones. I have to be, honestly, really, body dysphoria for me is nothing to laugh about. Soooo, back to topic, I am reading as a regular guy. Its just natural for me. And my wife wants shoes. So we go to Payless Shoes to get her shoes, 3 hours in the shoe store, going through her shoes. I help her with that, and I am tall and can see, and it goes really well. She gets her walking shoes, she has a new store job on concrete and walking to work, she needs them. Naturally I get curious, I have plenty of shoes, mens, ladies, boots, you name it. But I saw Valarie's shoes the other day and I went to find them, and viola, there they were. So, I pull up my pant leg, pull off the knee highs from my very female legs, and try to cram my foot into a size 9. In NY language.... forgedaboutit. Cant get my foot into it, has to be zippered. Cant even get close. So I find the lady that was helping my wife, and ask her to help me find a 9 or a 10. She helps, then says, puzzled, "Your wife wants this?" Clueless. So I lift up my pant leg showing my womens boots and calf and said to her "No dear". LOL. "The look of horror on her face. But I did have better hair than she did" No just kidding there. She smiles a rather nice smile and we both laugh, and I try the boot on. No go. Not a chance. So I zip up my knee highs and take the boots back. then looked down... One boot inside the jeans. One outside to my knees. HAH! Fixed it, never got the boots but I have 3 pairs of knee highs anyway. I want longer heels some time though, mine are 1 1/2 or 2.. I want 2 1/2 or even 3. Anyway, out to Walmart, and I walk through the lingerie section on the way to health and beauty where I hope to find something to renew my poor wig, which is frizzed and blended hair. I had told my wife I wanted a push up, the night before I had chatted about bra tricks with a very beautiful NB TS who is quite well known as an activist here, and she told me how she gets cleavage with her A's. She has more fat than I do though. But I spotted a vassarette pushup bra, a 36B, and it took about a second to grab and and walk to my wife. So here is this androgynous guy walking through Walmart in a rather tough neighborhood with a white bra in his hands. I was comfortable, I don't care a whit. We check out, and the check out girl draws a breath and says "OMG what a pretty ring." She's looking at my trans ring of course, which is dazzling. And thats it. Wife was with me, she sees me with the bra, no big deal. This is what its like to shop after being out for 3 years trans. You get what you want, and you take it home, and you enjoy being yourself. And by the way, that is how I look at work too. But there are times, and quite a few of them, when in my fluidness, I am on the street fully she, and there isn't the slightest hint of guy in me. Thats just me, my experience. Every single one of us is different. This is a pic of the trans ring, not very good. Blue pink white pink blue stones on stainless steel, custom made, 50 bucks. Called by the cis a grandmothers ring. The other ring is an amethyst, I have a tendency to wear two on one finger. Trinity. Attachment Deleted

Wow, a lot of good advice and perspectives here! Since I have tomorrow off I'll just have to try out my local thrift stores and see if I find anything that I might like for the warmer months.

I know this is an old thread but I started really looking at going with some more femme presenting clothing other than my neutral tanks / leggings. However, being a big person it does have a lot of limitations.
I shop online at Woman Within and Full Beauty. They have an awesome collection of stuff ranging from the standard tops and tees to lacy lingerie. My biggest problem right now are shoes. I wear a size 12W mens shoe and if I understand the conversion chart that would put me at a 14W minimum. Even the stores I am shopping at only go up to women's 12W.
So my question is does anyone know of a place online or in store that sells women's 14W+ ?
I saw a beautiful pair of boots and flats but was so disappointed that they didn't come in the size I need.
Also, does anyone have any other large size shops that are out their. Avenue is one but even at their top end they are still just out of reach.
So far I am down 40 lbs and still working. But it will be a while before I get into a better range.
Right now, depending on the store and item I range from 30/32, 34/36 dress / shirt, 12 Pantie and a 52B or 52C bra.
Love you all
:hugs:

I usually wear a size 11 wide men's, and can make most size 12W work in women's, and some 13W are way too big. Half sizes don't seem to be common in women's shoes. Payless carries up to size 13W, you might be able to squeeze into some of their shoes. I haven't tried them yet personally but longtallsally.com sells shoes up to size 15. I've also occasionally seen large size shoes that at places like Nordstrom Rack and Marshalls, though there's not much selection.
