I've had to take care of so many lost and scared animals, there is a blend of them all in my head. Dogs if they are scared and nervous, just need to be taken with and spend time with whatever is causing it.. He actually does pretty good on a leash. Doesn't really try to walk ahead, although here and there a sound will distract him and he'll stop to look to make sure the sound isn't going to hurt him.. but then if I talk to him and keep walking, he'll follow because he doesn't want to get too far behind. The leash is just for safety at this point, really. In the back yard he'll follow me around without it on, although today he did slowly start to explore it a little on his own which was nice to see. He's doing well. He does want to be right next to us and will whine sometimes if he can't, but I'm working on crate training and as long as I sit next to the crate until he settles in and gets comfortable, then I can leave and he'll stay quiet and calm. If I leave too soon though, he'll cry still. But it's only been two days... so that's huge progress on that in that amount of time. Separation anxiety is something I'm always afraid of because it's a hard one, but he's doing great. I don't think he has it, thankfully. His bathroom habits are improving slightly, too. I keep up with him and keep him next to me or crated, and then outside a lot. So he's only had that one accident because I haven't given him the chance to have another. He still tries to hold it, but he's slowly giving in to peeing outside when he can't hold it anymore. So that's progress, too. I'm confident I can potty train him. We got him a play pen, we're just waiting for it to get here. Then he can be in there when I can't have him leashed to me, which gives him more room than the crate. More room, and still not much chance for accidents. I also think he's attached to us, already. He'd sleep on our laps all day if we let him, and constantly tries to climb on us and nudge us with his nose for pets. Between that, and him sleeping on us all the time, it's like having a cat that we can take places with us. He's quiet, doesn't bark yet (and hopefully won't start), sweet, not snappy. He still jumps away any time I go to put the leash on him though, so usually I have to sit down and call him to me and then put the leash on. Besides that, he's coming around. I think he'll make a good dog, and a nice easy project for me to start with with dog training. I think I might even be able to work him up to being able to pass the K9 good citizenship test, once he has a little more time to trust me. That's a goal I had... it would be nice to put in a portfolio of things I've done if I really want to be a dog trainer. I think he wouldn't be too difficult for that. Plus he's a great companion. And cute. I definitely think Chihuahua mixed with Jack Russell but with an almost entirely Chihuahua temperament. (Not the asshole kind of Chihuahua, but the more well-rounded and sweet kind of Chihuahua.) Definitely no terrier temperament though. Just the color and head shape a little bit and the half flopped over ears.

Tomorrow will be a week since we got Jax. Tomorrow is also my birthday. I'm going to be fucking 30. Omg. Anyway, mild stress with the dog. He does appear to have some separation anxiety. Not so bad that he has accidents or is destructive, but I'd like to keep it from getting to that point and it's kind of difficult. Otherwise, he's coming around a lot. He plays some. Mainly his version of playing is running around at full speed like a maniac in the living room, either chasing you or wanting you to chase him. It's pretty funny. He also runs if he knows you're trying to catch him, like to put a leash on or something. He seems to think it's fun to make you work for it. That, and he doesn't want to be caught because of course that's no fun... who wants to have a leash on, or to be stopped from doing something? But he does walk good on a leash once it's on. He also seems to be potty trained already. So, he's a good dog. He just has a little anxiety sometimes. And I have anxiety about fixing that relatively quickly, because I worry about it getting out of hand. But maybe it'll be a passing thing... so long as I keep working on it. Also, I made him a sweater out of the sleeve of an old sweater of mine. He was cold at the park the other day...

Happy Birthday! LOL. The dog sounds a lot like my grandson, except that the dog is potty trained and my grandson isn't. We are working on it. But they both can play ball I bet Thanks My body definitely decided to let me know my age, today. Ugh. Cramps so bad this morning I thought something was really wrong for a little bit. Your grandson sounds like a lot of fun! We should get Jax a ball and see what he does. He does have a stuffed animal, but so far he seems more interested in running around the room like it's a race track than he does with his toy. Maybe he wanted to be a greyhound. Haha. He might make a good agility dog. I always wanted to try that with a dog... so expensive, though. I'm thankful that he's small enough that it doesn't take 5 hours of exercise to make him happy. He's ready for my lap again after a few laps around the house and bouncing off the couches. That's about the energy level I was looking for... so he can go hiking or to the parks whenever we go, but also not chew everything up out of boredom.

Thanks! You've never had a dog?? What about a cat? Or do you just not bother with pets since you didn't have them as a kid? I guess pets are normal for me since I grew up around them so it's weird to not have one. But I guess if you've never had one, it's not like you'd feel like you're missing out if you never get one. Sort of like how people ask if I feel like I'm missing out because I'm allergic to peanut butter. But how can I miss something I've never had?? lol I guess it would be nice to not miss having pets around, though. Less to worry about. They are kinda stressful at times but when you're used to having them around, your living space feels empty without one.

I haven't seriously considered getting a dog since I was a kid. I've been living in apartments for a long time, and they seem to always either charge more or don't allow them at all. Ah, that makes sense. Yeah apartments and other rentals are assholes about pets. Like when they won't allow certain breeds or sizes... That's why we got a small dog this time, 10lbs. I haven't seen a weight limit below 10lbs yet. lol. No reason why we wouldn't be able to have him... But, small dogs aren't necessarily easier. I think a lot of larger breeds are better to start out with. Not medium... those have the most energy. But a lot of large or extra large breeds don't have a lot, and are easier to have in an apartment because of that. But most apartments don't allow ones that size... like I think a newfoundland dog would be good to start with, they're giant teddy bears and don't need much. If you don't mind drool. But good luck finding somewhere to allow a 100 - 150lb dog. (You probably won't, ever.) Sometimes I think weight limits are backwards. Most 30 - 40lb dogs seem to need enormous amounts of exercise and are terrible for apartments. But it's easier to find an apartment with one that size. lol. 10lbs is easier to rent with, and doesn't need as much exercise (still needs more than a big one like a newfoundland) ... but more separation anxiety I think, and can be hard to potty train which is also not the best for an apartment unless you really know how to potty train one. They'll stink up a place fast, otherwise. lol. So probably not the best for first time dog owners unless it's already house trained. So yeah I can see why you don't have one. It's way easier if you own a house.

I am a bit scared of large dogs, probably from lack of being around them much. That and a few bad experiences as a small child with large dogs, though those were dogs that were quite a bit bigger than me at the time. I'm pretty sure dogs that are taller than me now while on all four legs don't exist.

Hypoallergenic cats, there are some that don't produce the protein in their saliva that makes most everyone who is allergic that way. There are some people who are allergic to the dandruff, but I guess that is a small percentage of the overall people allergic to them. Google it and pick your cat, personally, the russian blues are a favorite, I never knew they were good for people with allergies to cats. New things everyday.

I'd hate to adopt a pet that I was allergic to. Really, I get by OK without them. I enjoy watching the cats that are outside, there's one that basically lives under the bushes on the side of the building. I don't know if it's one of the neighbors and goes to one of their patios or what sometimes, it used to be super scared of me and run whenever I walked by, but doesn't seem as scared now.

If you decided you did want to try for one, maybe you could go through a shelter or rescue and visit with the cat for a little bit, first. Then you know if it will bother your allergies. It is kind of rare to find a sphynx in rescue, but I'm sure you could if you waited long enough and just kept an eye out. One of the shelters here does a "sleepover" thing where if you get approved to adopt, you can take one home for a few nights and see how it goes before you commit to it. I thought that was a pretty cool idea. Maybe there are others that do that, too.

Simple allergy test from a Dr would tell, but the dandruff thing is pretty low I guess. Try some cat spit to be sure...

The dandruff clings to the hair of some better I think. There is one that is a long hair that isn't a usual allergy problem. Google it and read up on it, some of it is basic, but there are a few surprises as well. A hairless cat might sound good up front, but they take more care because of it. But the spit thing would be easy to have a Dr test you for it vs the dandruff.

Jax's separation anxiety is getting better. Now he only cries for a few minutes when we leave, and even then he doesn't always. So he's getting there. Definitely house trained. He goes to the door. Even if he was just outside and he decides that he forgot to pee, he'll go to the door. That's really good. He's also hilarious. He makes us laugh pretty much every day. Whether it's because he's bouncing off the couch, or burrowing under blankets... or stealing the socks I just folded and running off with them like he did yesterday. But, now the Chihuahua is coming out. LOL. He's getting growly and protective of us. That's going to be a fun thing to work on... So, no one else sees his silly side but us because he wants to act afraid of everyone else. I guess that's a typical Chihuahua trait. He bonded to us and now he suddenly doesn't want anyone else.. despite being pretty friendly before he bonded to us. Weirdo dog. But he house trained fast and is getting through his separation anxiety so maybe he can work through that relatively quickly, too. Oh, and he has more freedom now since he's doing so well with his house training. No more being leashed to us.
