www.advocate.com/commentary/2016/3/30/fundamentalist-backlash-against-lgbt-community-full-swingAnti-LGBT thinking still exists today in too many communities in America. These communities wield an undue influence in many state and community legislatures. I’ve felt for more than a dozen years that we cannot ignore these folks. Doing so is at our own peril . . . I agree. We can't ignore them. They're making it hard for us to do so. How can we stop this backlash? Under the new leadership of Eliel Cruz, the organization I co-founded a decade ago, Faith in America, is renewing efforts to educate people about the harm they cause to innocent LGBT people with outdated, ill-informed, and misguided religious teachings. It’s not easy, but we must do it.
I personally greatly appreciate your sincere efforts and I wish you the best. It's just that it's hard to see how to educate certain people. I myself feel it's better to turn first to those who can be educated. What these fundamentalists need, I believe, is not so much education as salvation.
