Always wear your safety gear while longboarding. Always stay within your limit of experience.

You were lying in the middle of the road with THAT? Lucky to be alive I think. Racing thing...

You Tube has lots of them. There's one where they cross the finish @60mph on wet roads. There's also lots and lots of vid's full of road rash crashes.
I road rashed my backpack and my pants. Lost my T-shirt and Hoodie in the ER... It was that bad, they had to cut them off.
If you look close to the X-rays, you can see where the bone was basically ripped apart across the front. The initial X-rays (I don't have copies) showed about thirty fragments. My bone Dr pointed them out and told me it's a good example of bone structure. The shards cut up my arm inside so bad it swelled up and turned black like a bruise. Most of the pain was from that, it pressed down on the nerves, pinching them.
That's 4 breaks under that plate. At the ball end, and down another inch or so, with the middle piece split in two.

I was worried about getting run over while I inched my way to the side of the road... Oh God, I'm so glad you didn't get killed! Back in the early sixties I was sitting in the back seat of a VW headed at warp speed to some town in Colorado. I was with two other GI's, we had just tried to meet some college girls in Bolder, Colorado. But what self respecting girls would be seen with three guys with GI Joe high and tight haircuts? So we proceeded to drink several pints of Haig & Haig when the driver started being stupid with the steering wheel, at 80 mph. The right front spindle broke off, the car went into a high speed nose stand, the guy in the passenger seat preceded me, flying through the front windshield. I felt myself flying through the air and landed on the pavement in the pushup position, stood up in time to dodge a PIE tractor trailer rig that was bearing down with it's brakes locked up. I had a concussion, the driver broke his back and the passenger had an extremely nasty head wound that took 32 stitches. So when you told me that Ativan, I had a cold shiver go down my spine for you.

I passed out twice from the pain, once right away and later as I tried to move the last foot off the road in one move. I couldn't get to my phone and had to wait for someone to come along and call for me.
That sounds like one nasty accident...

It was embarrassing, more than anything. That it was a precursor to going into the hospital, is for now the worst repercussion. It's still difficult to move it certain ways, but it'll get better in time. I should look back at what I had to say back then, most of it is blanked out from all the opiates I was taking.

I expect that the PT will be long and regaining range of motion difficult. I have crashed motorcycles at speed, but never have I been as vulnerable as the kids I see on long boards screaming down winding roads in the mountains. Thank you for being willing to share this tale, If nothing else it reinforces my desire not to pick up another crazy habit. It sure looks like fun though.

All the safety gear in the world wouldn't have prevented the injuries. It is the same as if I had fallen down a few steps and caught myself with that arm. The older you get, the more brittle your bones. The injury is similar to older people falling and trying to stop the fall with their hand/arm. The hand catches and then the arm twists and folds, and finally the shoulder hits, the set up for a fracture. I just hit it a little harder than that. Getting the full range back, but it hurts some days, still.
