The people who thrive on being offended are worse than the people who are being offensive. Not everyone intends to say offensive things, but it is always a choice to be offended.
If someone attempts to upset me by calling me names, or insulting a loved one, or even making hostile remarks about my life philosophy, all I can really do is roll my eyes. If anything they said had any truth to it then maybe it would sting; or maybe not.
So why do people get upset and offended when another's choice of words is contrary to their view of the world? It is because they thrive on emotional response. It's like a high. It's a kind of psychic vampirism. They actually make themselves open to offense; even making subtle hints in their own words to get someone to say something ugly or to say a word in a certain context that they disapprove of.
A trans* performance artist from Canada that I was following on Twitter had asked the question, "Why do American lives matter more than others?" I replied and said, "We are the retarded one in the family, so we get special treatment." She then responded, saying, "Hey, that's a really bad ableist analogy. Please don't tweet that kind of thing to me."
First of all, I was born with High-Functioning Autism. I was also born with Spina Bifida Occulta. Therefore, I have two disabilities, and I collect SSI every month. Can a disabled person seriously be ableist? I have nothing against people who are mentally retarded. The word itself simply means 'slowed down'.
The American education system is a joke in comparison to other countries, we are far more over-sensitive about things that we obsess over censorship, we still have no decent understanding of what liberty is, and we still buy into the false paradigm of party politics. I'll say it again: America is retarded. That statement does not say, "I discriminate against the mentally handicapped."
So, to all the Social Justice Warriors: STOP PUTTING WORDS IN PEOPLES' MOUTHS, AND STOP MAKING ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT OUR CHARACTER. YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL.

I'm amazed to hear this from another person in the trans community. I'm usually the crazy, offensive outlier for having opinions like this, lol.
God, I despise the term "ableist." I also despise anyone trying to control language in any form. "That offends me!" is not an argument.

Being part of the LGBT community should not default you into some obnoxious, left-wing cry baby who takes offense to every little thing. That's just no way to live.

It seems like the LGBT community has a lot of those types, though. Or, even worse, the people who aren't actually part of the LGBT community, but decide to be offended on our behalf, but then happily turn on us when we tell them we didn't actually find whatever was said offensive. Then we're bad people who don't understand how we're hurting ourselves by not recognizing how offensive and hurtful everything is! D:

I really don't understand the root of the catiness.
Reminds me of a bar where the girls get rough.
Years of bullying, bitterness causing short fuses?
I don't wanna go to a social.thing partly close I don't want to be disillusioned.
I'd rather stay here where folk are warm and fuzzy feeling.

Oh did this thread ever strike a chord with me! I'm almost afraid to comment because practically everything I say nowadays is seen as offensive to someone. The comment "I'm offended" and "That makes me uncomfortable" are two remarks that drive me into a silent rage! My daughter-in-law continually corrects me, as an example: When I was referring to an Asian person as an Oriental, her face fell and she said, "That's not right, it's an Asian person!" I thought wait a minute here, what planet are you on and who the hell is the senior adult here you little bitch! Then I go on and continue using the term Oriental and she says, "That makes me so uncomfortable!" This kind of bullshit makes me want to punch people's face in and stamp on their fucking heads. Thanks for letting me vent, I feel better already and I hope I didn't offend anyone or make anyone feel uncomfortable.

It's like someone saying "transgendered" which sounds as if we're being smashed into a factory mold. So, the word "Oriental" is mainly used for non-human items.

I find it most amusing that folks who are easily offended or found uncomfortable by another person's words or opinion, they are mostly vocal about it online. The Keyboard Warriors... if you will. The people who are vocal about it offline, I notice they are the quiet-in-public, rage-behind-closed-doors type, they are poor or dealt with misfortune in their life (perceived or otherwise), have little to no friends and spend a vast majority of their time online, slamming their hatred into a stranger that in all probability, hasn't done anything to deserve it.
My previous partner was one of them. It was pathetic that she had to bring others down (myself included) just to make her own shitty life tolerable in her eyes.
People like that, like her, people who demand others to be politically correct, it's enough to make me tear my hair out.
There's only so much pussyfooting and sugarcoating that people end up doing more harm than good.
The Queen's Palace is a wonderful example of this forsaken behavior, shielding folks from the the reality of situations and life by spoon-feeding them misinformation and fear mongering.

I'll go with what Jacey said! Oriental is an all inclusive term of a group of people living in the Far East often referred to as the Orient and also as Asia, just like the term mankind is an all inclusive term referring to the inhabitants of the earth, both men and women. People have to get over their penchant for picayune parsing and making life into an exercise in hopscotch trying not to step a cow pie and being criticized for it.

It's not the "in" term these days, but I dunno if it's something Asian people would actually find offensive. It just sounds like a generational language gap to me. Next time she says something like that, I'd ask her why she finds the word offensive. I'm betting her response will be something to the effect of "because!"

Some people even take offense (for others, of course) to the word "gypsy" as if it's a Romanian slur. Like I said, these people choose to be offended. They feed on the dramatic. They are histrionic brats.

I know a woman from Transylvania in Romania, her English is getting better so I felt compelled to ask her if she felt any desire to bite me. Some PC people close by gasped when I said that, but she thought it was a riot and we've been good friends ever since.

Usually those that are too easily offended haven't had to deal with facing "persecution" from other's like those of us that are not easily offended. Usually the ones that are easily offended are in no way connected to the group that they felt was offended. Jesus, what is wrong with the word retarded, yes it can be used as a insult but when I was growing up I had a cousin with I think Cerebral Palsy and everyone said he was retarded. No insult just a description. But everyone talks differently and uses different words. That is the main reason why "tranny" and "shemale" doesn't bother me because a lot of people only know those words to describe transgenders. Now if it is blurted out as an insult then much like Illuminess, I'll just roll my eyes and walk away.
I don't know why but nothing seems to offend me. You can call me whatever. I Guarantee it won't be anything new that I haven't been called before. I don't care because these people don't have to live my life and I don't have to live theirs, Thank God.
Really the word Gypsy offends? I mean most of the time I don't even relate that word to the true Gypsies from that area, I relate it more to people that spend a life time on the road and or moving from town to town that make a living by moving. I mean most OTR truckdrivers are said to live a Gypsy lifestyle. Entertainers that spend 6 to 8 months going from town to town are the same. I mean the band Cinderella came out with the song, Gypsy Road. I always took a little pride in being referred to as a Gypsy because I was totally more or less on my own. Everything about commitments to be somewhere at a specific time was all on me and no one with a proverbial whip behind me saying go.
Unfortunately there is a lot of money to be made through the whole "Social Justice" thing. Usually it's about race but sometimes about sexual orientation and or gender identification. It is a whole political thing just for numbers in most cases. Thus I'm not left or right but I am physically conservative and socially liberal. Uncontrolled spending and pandering to one group or another whether left or right makes me sick. If you have no substance or values enough to be in politics and stick to those ideals even though I may not agree with them at least I will respect you. And if anyone ever ASSUMEs that we all belong to the same political parties or we all think the same way or have all faced the same situations in life then they truly are ASSes. But not me. I respect whatever people believe in, either the left or right, either an activist or quietly behind the curtain or just those of us that want to just live our lives in peace. Maybe people really need to understand us. We have faced what they actually think offends us and we live with it everyday. We deal with when they can't, this whole thread is a testament to that. So they can cry foul all they want and cry all the crocodile tears they want. But really, maybe they should try to understand us on deeper levels than just a MTF or FTM, binary or nonbinary. Those are just descriptions and we are way deeper than that, we are individual people spanning many backgrounds and so on. Really to me it goes to show how little they truly know about us.

...I am physically conservative... *giggles* Are you sure you're physically conservative, sis? Somehow that seems like such an inappropriate way to describe you. (Yes, I know you meant fiscally conservative, but it still made me laugh.)
