Rebel Wilson stole the show with her speech at the BAFTAs on Sunday (14 February) night, but the Australian comedian has been accused of cissexism on social media for a transgender joke. Wilson, who is best known for her roles in Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids, was presenting the award for best supporting supporting actor. ‘I have never been invited to the Oscars,’ she began reading awkwardly from a piece of paper. ‘Because as we know they are racists.’ ‘But the BAFTAs have diverse members. And thats what we all want to see in life, isn’t it? Diverse members.’ Wilson then shared her hope of returning to win a BAFTA herself one day. ‘I have already been practicing my transgender face,’ she joked, before looking coyly into the camera. While Wilson elicited laughs from the audience, not every one on social media thought her transgender joke was funny. There has been a recent phenomenon in Hollywood where transgender roles are given by cisgender actors, which activists have criticized as ‘transface.’ The Danish Girl, about one of the first transgender people to undergo gender affirmation surgery, was up for five BAFTAs and had Eddie Redmayne the lead. www.gaystarnews.com/article/rebel-wilson-causes-controversy-with-transgender-face-joke-at-baftas/#gs.pSGPzkQ

I think we can guess what the crux of the problem really is!
