Personally I hate the term "hate crime". Crime is crime. They should take the stiffer sentences that they want to add to hate crimes and apply that to any criminal act. If I lost a family member because they were the victim of a hate crime or I lost a family member in the process of a crime. I lost a family member that I loved very much. If they were LGBT or of a different race would not matter. I lost a dear loved one. All lives and people are important and no one should be victimized regardless of sexual orientation, gender identification or ethnicity. To battle crime, let's make the penalties more stiff if there is a victim involved that is either hurt or killed.
BTW there may be crimes of passion but very few crimes are committed with love being a factor. I really don't feel like my life is more important than anyone else's just because I'm Trans. If someone hurts someone else the penalties really should be stiffer than what they are.
