Hi, Aisla!
I remembered something this morning. I have no idea why it came to me. I don't know if you've ever read any of Bill Bryson's books. I'm a great fan of his travel books. My favorite is the one he wrote on Australia. That book more than anything else made me want to visit the place. Alas! On my budget I've never made it down (sorry, up) there, and future prospects don't really look too bright. But who knows? Maybe some day fortune will smile on me.
Anyway, somewhere on his travels Down Under (sorry, Up Above) Bryson heard a story which is perhaps the funniest I've ever heard. Like this:
There was a little girl living next to a vacant lot where a crew came in one day to start building a new house. Being so little, naturally she wandered over to see what was going on, and the lads immediately took to her. She became their official mascot, and they were always finding her little jobs to do to keep her busy and out of harm's way. Then at the end of the week the foreman gave her a little pay packet.
She was delighted, took it to show her mother, who suggested she might like to use it to open a bank account. Right, off they go to the bank where the little girl informs the teller, "I was building a house this week!"
The teller replies, "That's wonderful! And will you be building again next week?"
"We will if we ever get the fuckin' bricks!"

I love Bill Bryson's humor. He seems to capture the color, the absurdity of different cultures and communities so succinctly and in such a humorous manner that I am usually left reeling in laughter. Would love to show you around Oz but hope my travels take me to Ireland and I have the opportunity to meet with you and to laugh at the absurdity of life in general.
Safe travels
Aisla

I like Bryson's humor as well. And he is very good at giving you a feel for a particular place. Entertaining and informative--how can you argue with that?
