I dont know how to take care of my wigs.  I dont like calling them wigs, they are my hair.  Its a TS thing...wigs sound fake, like a costume, to me, its my detachable hair, I can take it off when I have to.

A question I've just been investigating. It depends on whether you're talking about human hair or synthetic wigs. I can't tell you a thing about the former because I've never owned one. They're simply beyond my means.

But as for the synthetic ones, for me the main problem is that they "frizz". It appears that they need good care in order to avoid that problem for as long as possible. Now I've been doing some things wrong. E.g., I was washing them with shampoo in hot water. It appears that heat is very bad for synthetic fibres. You're supposed to use cold water, and they don't need to be soaked long. A couple of minutes will do it. Then rinse them well in cold water. Put them on a wig stand to let them drip-dry normally--and that doesn't usually take too long. Perhaps a few hours, depending on conditions. In cool, humid conditions such as we have where I live, it'll generally take a day or so--which is why I always have a spare on hand. But above all, you don't want to dry them around any sort of heat, a hair dryer or heater, e.g.

Also, it appears that any sort of shampoo made for human hair is bad for synthetic fibres. There are special shampoos made for synthetic fibres, and naturally manufacturers will charge you an arm and a leg for them. I've read that Woolite (liquid) detergent will work well, so that's what I plan to try and see how it goes.

Finally, I've read that the usual sort of hair brush is bad. A wide-tooth comb is supposed to be better. But I have tried a comb, and it actually seems to be worse to me. So I've gone back to brushes. I've found that wigs need to be brushed regularly and well. They get tangles in them, and once you've got tangles, it's hard to get rid of them. Brushing them hard to get rid of tangles increases the frizz that you're trying to avoid. The problem with brushing is that every time you do it, you pull out a certain number of fibres. You'd like to avoid that. But in my experience a wig starts looking bad not when it's lost too many fibres, but when it gets frizzy. I've had wigs that have lost lots of fibres but still look OK. The real problem is the frizz, and I'm still experimenting on how to delay that problem.

The recommended brushing/combing technique is to start at the bottom and gradually work your way up. That makes sense because if you start at the top and try to brush all the way down, you're putting a lot of strain all along the entire length of the fibres.

I've had a lot of trouble finding good quality wigs that aren't hugely expensive. You have to shop wisely. I used to order stuff from the Far East, but a couple of unpleasant experiences have broken me of that habit. I would above all recommend avoiding China. I just got ripped off in ridiculous fashion by a Chinese crowd. You can always identify the "foreigners". The English on their websites is strange. They also have a habit of "borrowing" photos of wigs from reputable merchants and then supplying cheap imitations. When you're shopping online, you should try and make sure you're dealing with a Western crowd. They should give contact details on their website that tell you where they're located.

Back when I wore one intermittently, I did use some moisturizer spray on mine, it helped to keep frizz and static out.

Wigs? Find one really good one that is top of the line human hair and then ask an expert about taking the very best possible care for it. I always did the cheaper wigs until my own hair grew and if they got messed up then oh well. I'm sure a top of the line will cost some big bucks and make sure it is the length and style you want and then put out the dough for it. But you would probably have to go to a specialty store for one and they should tell you the absolute best way to care for it.

If you are going to have to depend on "detachable hair" for whatever reason. Go for the best. Like I said, I did the cheap deal for a while when I grew mine out at least to chin length. From chin length on then it was all on me. Buy a really good one that is the style you want it. Some stylist will even cut it the way you want. Then after a few months or a year buy another one and have it cut a different way. But synthetics work good if you are just biding your time until your own grows.

I just got mine cut today from 1/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches to even it all up. Got tired of the "V" shape. Even got a little more bounce out of my curls.  I won't say what happened when I got home though.

This thread got me a bit curious (damn my curiosity, it's going to kill me some day), so this evening I've done a bit of research. (No need to thank me, it was done purely out of the goodness of my heart, though if you insist on thanking me, you can put €1000 into my PayPal account, I won't object.) I knew that things were bad, but until really looking into things closely, I didn't realize how bad they were.

I didn't realize how many operators there are out there pretending to be British, when in fact they ain't. There's lots of them, and you buy from them at your peril. I learned that the hard way. To give you an example:

This is an extremely popular model--the "Mylie", manufactured by Hot Hair. It used to be my favourite. You haven't seen gorgeous until you've seen me in the Mylie in the fabulous colour "Glazed Fire". (OK, I'm getting a bit carried away now.) Unfortunately, that colour has now been discontinued and none of the other shades suit me. So I'm out of luck there. It's a disadvantage being a red-head. Your options can be quite limited.

But to continue: you'll find the Mylie on lots of websites. But when you go to the "Delivery Page" on the website you're looking at, you'll see something to the effect: "Standard Production time 5-7 days." In other words, that crowd are admitting that they're not going to send you the Mylie by Hothair. They're going to throw together something themselves. And in all likelihood, it's not going to be very good quality. It may look more or less like the Mylie, but it won't be the Mylie, and probably won't be satisfactory.

To my utter astonishment, I came across one site this evening that openly admitted that what they'll ship you won't actually be what they're advertising. Their site said something like: "Will the item you receive look like the picture? The customer hopes so and so do we." Absolutely unbelievable.

However, they offer you a solution to the problem if you're not happy with what you get: go to a hairdresser and see if they can style it for you. Absolutely unbelievable. In other words, the manufacturer won't give you what you ordered, so maybe the hairdresser can--assuming that you feel like paying the hairdresser after you've already paid the manufacturer, and assuming that a hairdresser can actually style a synthetic wig, which they can't.

This is where I got taken in recently. I hadn't copped on to stuff like this, so I ordered something, and what I got was a cheap piece of **** that you wouldn't wear to a Halloween party. And this is precisely what the manufacturer suggested that I do: take it to a hairdresser. I told them I wanted to send it back to them. They balked. They tried to negotiate. Eventually they offered me about 50% of what I'd paid them. I refused. That bit of rubbish wasn't worth 1% of what I'd paid them. But they seemed to think that because they had actually shipped me a wig, they were entitled to something. I got the impression that they thought I was being extremely unfair to them.

We need to realize that morality can vary from country to country. E.g., when I was in Kenya, somebody explained to me (and I eventually came to believe they were right) that when a Kenyan sees an item lying about when ownership of it isn't completely clear, he feels free to help himself. If ownership is clear, there is a huge taboo against taking it. One time a young kid walked into the home of one of my colleagues and took a camera. She reported it to the police simply because she wanted it back. She wasn't particularly concerned about the culprit being punished. But the police had no trouble finding him. In a little rural community, everybody knew what everybody was up to, and before you knew it, that kid was hauled into the police station and caned. No trial, no plea bargaining, he was caned. And when my colleague protested (she never imagined that would happened) she was bluntly told to mind her own business. "This is our country, not yours!"

And so I've come to conclude that these foreign operators don't really see anything wrong with what they're doing. They post a picture of the Mylie, and they do their best to send you something that might look more or less like the Mylie. And I think their feelings are hurt when you angrily protest.

So remember what they say: "Caveat emptor!" Which is Latin for, "It's your ass, sucker!" They certainly got mine.

Wow. I have only ever bought wigs in person because I've never been keen on ordering something like that or even clothing online. I need to see it in person and try it on.

I have always bought online, but I have had friends say that I really should consider next time buying one locally instead of online. I never get mine washed often enough. I really should be more diligent about it, but between work and everything else I don't always have the time as often as I would like to. At least I know that I should start brushing from the bottom first now. I had been brushing from the top yet felt it was affecting them by doing so.

They do usually cost a little more when you buy them brick and mortar, but at least you know what you are getting and can try them on and get advice and even any styling needed for it.

And yeah, any long hair, wig or natural, should be combed or brushed starting at the ends and working your way up to reduce big tangles and avoid ripping hair out. I haven't worn a wig in more than 8 years and never everyday, so I never had to worry about really worrying about taking care of them long term. I think I still have one in the closet somewhere, the others I gave to someone in need years ago. Also, it helps to avoid too clean of parts in a wig too, it can let the cap show through.

Tis true. I'm not expecting them to be long term for me either my hair is filling natural hair is filling in nicely. I'm glad it didn't come down to needing rogain either because I would have preferred a wig permanently over rogaine though especially with pets in my house.

Ok so I wander into the wig store cause they have two for one and its a rough neighborhood.  Being picky, I look at about 200 wigs and decide two of them are perfect.  So here I am, stealthed up because I am heading home to the ciswife, mascara off, hair at that time was andro, nothing looking cool except my knee high boots.

And there I am in the girly store, having greeted the sales lady who was there on her first day on the job.

Trying on my new hair in the middle of the store, in serious public.

And I put my hand over my mouth with the first one on, and if you heard the intake of her breath, it reverberated through the store.

Instant and total transition, just with a hand, and my detachable new hair.  Oh how I love my hormones and what they did for me.

My first wig was 35 years ago, and I was probably drunk, and it went with one of the 50 purges.  My second was two years ago, off the shelf and blind, no try on.

But the last two, which y'all have seen, were at this place.

So, her first sale at her new job.   To me, transsexual to the max.

Online?  No way baby.  And I went synthetic blend because I was scared the hair could be from a dead person.

I always believed that was the case and I'm sure that is probably why mine is back ordered while they wait for more.
