All it takes is respect.
To care for a patient, you must respect their gender identity, just as anyone would respect a patient's dietary requirement and religious needs.
To disregard that, is to bring harm to the patient which goes against their oath of caring for their patients.
Why do you think residents who judge their patients in tv shows get immediately shut down by their superiors and put into their place? Because it is not their place to judge, their place is to support the patient even if they disagree with them.
It is common sense. Do your freakin' job and put aside your prejudices and personal opinion - that is basically what this boils down to.
Such a crying shame.

Such a crying shame. I can kind of understand if it comes to SRS complications and something like that. But, I hate to say this but I didn't read the article. So if they don't have a Doctor that is familiar with SRS and complications that can arise from it, then they should do what they can and get you to a facility that is familiar with LGBTQ. I mean really other than SRS or HRT and or complications related, WTF? Bodies are bodies. Basically we are all the same, A sack of meat surrounded by skin with the same insides except for reproductive organs and filled with blood that carries oxygen from the lungs through the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood to the lungs. That is breathing. I'm no MD and know that much. :rolleyes:So I can understand the T since we are special with HRT and SRS and complications that may be tied to that but they don't have an Endo on call? A surgeon maybe that can consult with another surgeon that can give advice or the patient get transferred to. Other than that it is a crying shame. But... That statement makes a lot of sense even common that isn't so common anymore. Personally if someone has prejudices, they should not be in the medical field, law enforcement or politics. You know the Wal-Mart checkout person looks at me like I'm a monster, no big deal. They don't decide whether I live or die, suffer or not and so on. But in the medical field with the same prejudices? That's not good. Same way with a cop that pulls me over. If that cop is prejudice against race, sexual orientation or gender identification, then that is not good. Most cops here in the states are fairly respectable of people. There are a few but the good outweighs the bad. You may not know it from the national news but I have been pulled over in Femme mode several times and the officer always asked me what I preferred to be called after seeing my license. LOL. I always told them, "Innocent of all charges." That usually got a laugh out of them and kept me from getting a ticket. And then tell them whatever they wanted according to how I was dressed. Always respectful. Ma'am in femme mode and usually a stern warning of "slow down". There are bad apples everywhere but the ones that aren't are usually pretty sweet. But there are some fields that people shouldn't if they have prejudices. We all have opinions like something else, but that shouldn't even be part of the equation of how you are treated.
