Are you hypervigilant or hyper aware?
Because of trans?
Something else?
Always identifying potential threats, reading body language, having an instinctive plan to defuse or counter or escape?
Betcha we all do...

I'm hypervigilant due to a history of abuse. It has nothing to do with being trans.

I have profound hearing loss and wear hearing aids in both ears, I take them out at bedtime and can no longer have any conversation as I cannot hear even an elevated voice. "Better tell me what you want to before bedtime sweetie other wise I won't hear you!" As I sleep I can still hear every creek and crack in the house, the stirring of the dog, my wife's breathing beside me, things going on outside and when something is out of sync with what's normal I awake instantly. That is hypersensitivity and it comes as a gift from having PTSD from one of Uncle Sam's proxy wars.

I still take 'cat naps' of ten to fifteen minutes sitting up without my head nodding off. Mind is in dream mode, I hear everything and can feel the slightest of movements. I was talking to someone today and agreed that the very worst is when the noise stops. It's waking up in a very high state of hyper-vigilance, before you are actually fully awake. Being trans itself has nothing to do with it, but being trans is always a part of everything, just the same.

Perhaps it is because I am trans. I joined the military because I wanted to prove that I was an alpha male, or at least to learn to become one.I have always been a light sleeper. In the military you took sleep when you could get it.
My first reaction is fight rather than flight. Perhaps it is that I subscribe to the view that the best form of defence is attack, but I suspect that for a large part of my life I have been insecure, embarrassed and convinced that I was badly flawed and that it would never be long before folk saw right through me.
Not sure if this is vigilance or paranoia, but I am quick to react. Adrenalin flows more quickly than most. I have to watch it. Breathing helps. Stopping. Pausing. Asking why.
Safe travels

Safe travels Aisla I think the military somewhat preconditions everyone to be on their toes and attentive to what's going on around them and to be proactive rather than reactive. My initial introduction to this mindset began with a drill instructor with bulging eyes and veins in his neck yelling, "Bend down reach between your legs, grab your ears and extricate your head from the murky recesses of your ass soldier!"
