Iceland recently changed its ages-old law that names must be classified as either male or female - so far you had to take gender-neutral names to court and get a petition through to take a name opposite of the assigned gender. One incident of that was a 4 year old girl named "Alex" last year. Well, they dropped that, which is nice too because in the same instance they allow people to take a neutral surname. Tradition there has it that if you are female it'll end on -dottir (daughter) and for males -son, with no between unless you were a foreigner moving there and kept your name. The third option is simply -bur (child) and while it can only be used if the gender you're registered as is their third option X too, it's a start nonetheless.
