If you're not familiar with Welcome To Night Vale, then you need to be! It's an amazing faux radio show hosted by the mysterious man named Cecil Gershwin Palmer who reports the bizarre goings-on in the town of Night Vale. You can subscribe to the podcast via iTunes, any podcast app, YouTube, Bandcamp or Soundcloud. Here is the pilot episode:
I've been writing my own Night Vale news reports and tidbits which you can read on my new Tumblr linked below.
◬ Are you a resident of Night Vale? Do you peer in from time to time through the randomly appearing cracks in reality during your afternoon yoga? Do you feel an almost déjà vu familiarity to Night Vale like the time you were surreptitiously hooded and taken to a strange room that smelled pleasantly of tobacco and vanilla? Well, then… you need to keep an eye or three on these secret updates. Not even The Council has liberty to restrict these words.
The one who is known as “The Impostor” has survived several attempts at re-education, and has successfully eluded even the hooded figures. All hidden cameras ever catch is an odd, wavy, translucent form. These reports are unfiltered, gluten-free, and cleansed of all lesions and abscesses before any potential public consumption. Reader discretion is unnecessary. ◬

I don't know how old you are Illuminess but it sounds something similar to Coast to Coast AM that was started with Art Bell. That was a really good radio show I mean Ghosts, goblins, demons, UFOs, time travel, cryptozoology, backwards speech and the list goes on. He kept me awake many nights driving down lonely highways. Even HWY 666. Yeah that is a real highway that goes from Gallup NM into Colorado. BTW it ain't 666 anymore but Hwy 491. That kind of sux. If you ever traveled on Hwy 666 it was a wild ride and one that you kind of respected at least. A lot of people died on that hwy. I just wonder what the ratio is now that it is numbered 491?

I'm 33, and it's nothing like Coast to Coast, because that was covering actual reported phenomenon, conspiracy theory and sadly a lot of new age garbage. Welcome To Night Vale is entirely fictional. It's supposed to be reminiscent of those old radio shows from the 50s, but with a snarky sense of humor.
One of the best moments of Art Bell's run was this phone call: I was hugely into the alien stuff back then, so you can imagine the butterflies I had when experiencing this as it happened!

Oh yeah. I remember that one. Yeah it kind of went down hill when George Noory took over. But let me tell you something. Art Bell kept be awake many nights on the road in the middle of the night. He kept a lot of drivers awake and aware late at night on the road.
I wouldn't call some of it new age garbage. Some yeah. But the things like reincarnation and so on outdate a lot of the new age stuff. OMG I hate that label "New Age". Do I think there is magic in quartz crystals. yes and no. It can store a lot of information. How I don't know. Do I think you can see the future in a crystal ball? Nah. A lot of stuff that was considered New Age back then was fairly ancient in origin. But it was stigmatized by some of the people that pushed it. The whole New Age deal was and still is moving from the Age of Pisces into the Age of Aquarius due to the sun's eclipitical path and what major constellation it passes through. This is due to the 26 degree tilt of the earth's axis and the rotation of the axis. 26 degrees is quite a bit if you think about it. Eventually it will turn desert climates into swamps or jungles over time and vice versa. It will make colder climates warmer and warmer climates colder. Sometimes truth is a lot stranger or more mysterious than fiction. I just wonder what may be on the continent of Antarctica if a lot of the ice melts. What might we find under all that ice? Some of which is miles thick.

Some of which is miles thick. Well, there's a difference between New Age Movement spirituality and genuine esoteric/occult spirituality from which it borrows only to fluff up and sprinkle glitter on. I've heard some wackos on Coast To Coast; things that sound pretty and wondrous, but are just implausible. People still buy into it, though, because it takes their focus away from reality. One was this old lady who claimed to be a past-life regression hypnotherapist whose ability and knowledge was special and she went on about theories of aliens and abductions that were just ridiculous. You could hear it in her smug voice that she knew she was full of it and knew people would still pay money to have her do whatever for special past-life knowledge.
What I hate about George Noory is that no matter who he has as a guest he just agrees with all of them. Art Bell always called people out on their bullshit. I called in one night to discuss my theories on what ghosts actually are, and I got one little thing in before they cut me off. It's like they don't want to hear it if it isn't sensationalist, fantastical or fear-invoking.

I mean you are talking to someone that used to investigate the paranormal and still does every now and then. So I have my own theories and they are all over the place because I really don't know. It could be this, it could be that. The shadow people I have a theory on but... There are Charlatans everywhere. A lot of psychics are and then there are ones that truly seem to have some kind of knowledge. But the Charlatans fare outweigh the number of ones that I believe truly have some kind of ability.

I used to do ghost hunting, as well, and a lot of UFO chasing. I was quite immersed in that world. It was fun. My mom and I share a bit of psychic ability, but nothing ridiculous. We're just good at reading energies so we know when people are suspicious before anyone else. Plus, I've always been very in tune with the "spirit realm" or whatever. I would get mental flashes of whatever human consciousness was still lingering. I haven't done that stuff in a long time, though. Don't really care to. It's still fascinating, but I'd rather channel it into fiction. I have a lot of story ideas. One of them is about a writer who is attempting a new book outside of his usual social commentary type stuff (i.e. Chuck Palahniuk kind of style). He decides to place himself in an environment where he has no easy access to TV or the internet, so he chooses an old saloon/hotel. This is where he meets the ghost (or demon pretending to be) that lives there. It wants him to tell his story, and keeps him from leaving until it's finished.

I've been listening to it lately. I really like it. I want one of those kittens.
