Thought I would pop this category's cherry. I have come to accept I have a lot of (gender)queer in my identity and sexuality. I feel the intense need to be gender non-conforming. When I was female, I always dressed or appeared masculine. When I am male, I dress feminine or appear feminine. What does being genderqueer mean to you? Do you use the term genderqueer? Or do you use other terms, e.g. Androgyne, Gender variant, gender non-conforming, gender atypical, etc.?

From the Warhol folks. They are quite genderqueer. Good luck figuring out their birth physical stuff. Imo anyway. Thats what I think it is.

I still just go with NB, but I welcome the new section and this thread, as well as all who identify as Genderqueer. Looking forward to those who identify as GQ filling this section up with some threads to share with us all here on the forum.

I am going to make the effort to meet the genderqueer/genderfluid folks who regularly attend the local transmen support group. They had their first support group held today, I was unable to make it but will go to the next one in June.

We have a queer group. As soon as I am confident enough, I will join it.

The word queer just has negative meaning for me. I was called "a queer, a fag and faggot" when I was younger. I was also called a "sissy" and that one happened to be right. Times change though so the word "queer" don't hold the same negativity it did when I was growing up. If someone prefers to use the word for themselves then I will accept it and respect their wishes. I just don't use it about myself though. To me it just brings back memories of getting beaten up in the boys room without a teacher present and so on because I was such a sissy. But WTF shemale and tranny don't bother me because no one even knew those words when I was growing up. Wow I am such a "Backasswards country girl".

When I see what was a slur turned upside down into a movement to throw off the oppression, it totally changes it. So if some slurs me and says "He's a queer" my response? "Yes I am, and its not he, its they (or sh'e depending on what gender I am showing.) I am not a guy. With a smile in my eye. Morexlikely though its "why does that bother you? " Humina humina humina....

" Humina humina humina.... LOL. Maybe because I like guys more than girls, Curly. Ya' know from the Three Stooges. I am strange for sure. That happens to be the definition of "queer". But I just don't think it fits me. I don't know Trinity. It may be because I got bullied while getting called "a queer" quite a bit. Remember that I embraced this whole trans thing at an early age. Really didn't have a choice or I would have been just another statistic. My best friend that happens to be gay but don't care for women trans or straight , feels the same about the word and fag and faggot. This guy was still my friend whether I was a sissy or not. Or even the word MAG or rather male ass grabber. I don't like men's backsides as much as I like what they have to offer in the front. So when I started playing music then the word Tranny was thrown about because of the makeup and clothes in the eighties hairmetal. Even in makeup and skimpy clothes then... I was cool. So I went from a "faggot" to being cool just because I could play a guitar. From a select frew friends to everyone wanting to be my friend when we started playing gigs. People are so shallow.

it's rude to call people queer unless you know them and know they're ok with it. you just don't call people any characteristics that stick out, as if that defines them as a person.
i'd personally be very happy to be called queer or gay, no matter what the other person meant with the word. but i'm an exception to "most people", who generally don't like to stick out. in the end i've even decided that my chest only bothers me personally for being there, rather than because people stare and box me because of the visual effect.

" Humina humina humina.... After a while of thinking of why those words bother me, it is just the negativity of my experience of being called those words at a young age. I do get what you are saying about taking ownership of the words and taking the power of the words from other people. Makes perfect sense. I remember playing a gig and right before I busted out the riff of Shout at the Devil dressed in slutty makeup wearing skimpy clothes and high heeled boots with teased hair and all, I took the mic and told all the assholes that ever called me a faggot or queer to kiss my ass. You are here to listen to me play. Then I just started busting out the intro on my Les Paul, backed away from the mic and then after the gig I don't know how many asses actually apologized. In true rocker fashion I just told these people OK and then to just go fuck off and die. I don't really know why the word bothers me that much when it is used to describe me. I have an idea though but won't go into it right now. Genderqueer I guess is OK because it has totally different menaing than jsut plain ol' queer.
