I don't know how many people know, but here in Ireland we're having a referendum on same-sex marriage in May. Now in theory the "Yes" camp should win easily since polls show that 70-75% of Irish people are OK with same-sex marriage. However, the "Yes" camp are well aware that we cannot afford to be complacent. The "No" voters will be out in force, whereas a lot of "Yes" supporters might not bother. There's nothing in it for them, really.
But the "Yes" campaign got a boost today:

When the nutters in the "No" camp come out with this kind of stuff, it's hardly going to hurt matters.

Well Foxglove people are people. Our politics are the same way here in the US. Since my heritage is Irish, I really hope it passes. So trans couples where one is a male and one a female but both classified through the almighty government as both being male can marry is a good thing. We really need to stop living by material characteristics and start living by Spiritual characteristics.

Another load of crap huh? I've seen same sex couples with children and the kids seem to get all the same good parenting that other kids do and more often than not grow up to self identify as hetro sexual which blows holes in all the theories fostered by bigots.

Early studies have already shown that kids raised by same-sex couples do as well as kids raised by the usual, vanilla sort of couples. I raised my son on my own for 16 years, and he's cisgender, heterosexual. What exactly would a bishop know about raising kids anyway?

Hell I had an hour long fight in a bookstore with a priest about where my possible children would go because I'm not Catholic. :rolleyes:I don't know if this is normal. But I did tell him where to go and it wern't Heaven.

You didn't get the memo? They know everything about everything. Well, Jamie, I'm sure you know the old joke about the guy who's died and gone to heaven, and Saint Peter is giving him a guided tour of the place. "Over there," says he, "those are the Presbyterians. And over there, those are the Baptists. And over there, those are the Episcopalians." Then they pass by a high wall, and Peter puts his finger to his lips. "Sh! Those are the Catholics. They think they're the only ones here."

Another bit of news today about the upcoming same-sex marriage referendum, and this news brought a tear to my eye: Brian O'Driscoll has announced that he will be voting Yes.
Who is Brian O'Driscoll? Perhaps the best athlete Ireland has ever produced. Until his retirement at the end of last year, he was universally acknowledged as one of the all-time greats of the game of rugby. A coach's dream--a world of talent, unfailing commitment, and level-headed as they come. Early on in his career, the fans gave him the nickname "God". Something like that would go to a lot of young lads' heads, but not O'Driscoll's. For him it was always business as usual--giving his all to the game. And he's not just a great athlete: he's simply a good guy. No arrogance or conceit about him. Just a good guy.
He's perhaps the most-loved guy in Ireland, and when he lends his support to the Yes camp, it will have an effect. Luv ya, Brian!
Another bit of good news: latest polls show that the Yes vote is holding steady at 76%. The No vote is at 21%. The fact that the "Don't knows" only come to 3% is, I think, another positive sign. People have made up their minds, and the Yes vote has a clear majority. They just need to get out on the day.

Seems as if it's in the bag Annabelle, thanks for the rundown on Mr. O'Driscoll, when you get the backing of such a sports luminary you're bound to change a lot of formerly undecided minds, pass me a pint of Guinness sweetheart!
Btw - Got a nice 4.3 lb brisket of corned beef for St. Patty's Day, we'll be doing small red potatoes, a quartered onion, and carrots in the crock pot on high for 6 hours with the brisket on top along with seasonings and 12 oz of Guinness, at the 5th hour I'll add cabbage wedges, it ought to be pretty good by the time it's done!

Seems as if it's in the bag Annabelle. . . Sadly it's not, Shan. The LGBT community are well aware that we cannot afford to be complacent about the result. The No camp will get out and vote. A lot of the Yes camp may not. A lot of straight people may be OK with same-sex marriage in principle, but they may not get out to vote because it simply doesn't mean anything to them.
Ireland has seen this sort of thing before. Back in the 80's when there was a referendum on the question of whether divorce should be permitted, polls indicated strong support for a Yes vote. But the Yes voters didn't get out, and the referendum only passed by 50.2% to 49.8%. So in theory this referendum should pass comfortably, but we're under no illusions that that will necessarily be the case.
Happy Paddy's Day! For me it's really no big deal. In our little town the parade won't be much of anything. Maybe I should get out and be a one-person LGBT campaigner? No, I don't think so.

We'll set a place at the table for you here, my spouse's roots are from Tipperary so you will be quite welcome.
