I would conquer my fear of heights and achieve my life-long dream of flying like a birdie if I did that hahahahaha!
Damn, so hardcore! How does he control the gliding without crashing into the ground? It has to be the right kind of windy day?

I can't stand on the edge and look down, most of these people can't either. You look to be sure, but step back and walk fast to leap. Once going down, all of your muscle memory training takes over, and you fly. It's a 7 to 1 glide ratio, you move forward 7 times more than you drop, 7' to 1'. The camera angles are deceiving, the ground falls away faster than 7 to one. Flying down harder is faster, 120mph and faster. I saw one video where a huge updraft took them higher than the cliff once their wings inflated. That looked just freaky. They are jumping from a platform that's over a drop of 1 kilometer. There's a glass platform next to the jumping one. 200 freefalls and then you can use a suit from a plane or helicopter until you are proficient enough to try proximity flying.

I made many parachute jumps during my two enlistments in the paratroops, was jumpmaster and senior parachutist. It satiated of all my interests in falling from the sky. My hat's off to those that want to pursue any of the dare devil extreme sports. Got my feet firmly on the ground and plenty happy with it.

Some part of me has always loved the idea of wingsuits, though if I ever had one myself it would have to be brown. Because that's definitely what color it would become if I ever came that effing close to trees, rock walls, ravines, etc.
Holy wow.

At 1:22, does it really go that fast when they fly through that area or is the video sped up? It's hard for me to tell. If I had to guess, it's not sped up, that's how it actually is?
It would be an adventure and a half to hike that hill and fly down it.
Hmm... I wonder how much a wing suit costs... I'm keen to fly the scenery, would give another usage for my GoPro Hero 2 aside from snorkelling.

Actual speed, possibly slowed down, they usually do. 100 to 120 mph is a good estimate of speed they are flying at. A few years ago, a custom fitted suit by the top maker was about $3,500. They say 99.9% of the time is in climbing and preparing for a 90 second run. Some of the more common runs I have seen are driving and then climbing. A couple are driving to a bridge over a ravine or a cliff edge, some a gondola. A helicopter is used on some, like the N Face of the Eiger Mt. Some of the climbing is just as scary looking as jumping off a cliff. Google 'wingsuit proximity flying' add 'best of' for 2013-2015 longer vids.

Doesn't it also cost something like 250 or 500 "vanilla" skydiving jumps before you can do it?
Or can you jump right into the wingsuit?

I believe it's 200 skydive jumps. Then it's jumping from a plane like skydiving until you show competency. If you watch the vids, you often see people much higher and farther out in the proximity runs. Personally, I like the very close ones, but knowing how airflow can be, they are just crazy to be doing the closest ones. 120 mph into even the near top of a tree can kill you, let alone into rock or the ground. There is a bogus vid of a guy landing on water, it's a fake. You can't slow down enough to be able to do it, there is a stall speed, but you're still moving far to fast. A dozen-two dozen people die every year, it is extremely dangerous. It's not so much a bucket list kind of thing as it is the bucket.

I'd love to do that, but it costs more money than I've ever made in a year and takes forever for them to let you go on your own. I'll just watch the Red Bull guys do it with VR glasses on.
