Lilly Wachowski*, co-creator of the Matrix and Sense8, recently came out as a trans woman after being hounded by Daily Mail reporters. I know Lilly has come out as a trans woman and honestly as a big fan of the Wachowski’s this is exciting but it’s obvious she does not want this to be a talking point. Lilly gave this statement on the subject: “I knew at some point I would have to come out publicly. You know, when you’re living as an out transgender person, it’s … kind of difficult to hide. I just wanted – needed some time to get my head right, to feel comfortable. But apparently I don’t get to decide this.”
I instead want to talk about why Lilly came out and how disgusting that reason is. The Daily Mail kept approaching Lilly’s agent asking about rumours to do with her gender. I know that the Daily Mail didn’t directly threaten to out Lilly but they did force her into coming out publicly much sooner than she would have liked to. I am so upset by this because transitioning and as such coming out to people should never be rushed. Pushing someone into coming out before they are ready and comfortable with themselves can lead to issues such as depression, anxiety and sometimes suicide.
This is not the first time that the Daily Mail has shown no regard for the lives and well-being of trans people. Lucy Meadows was horribly driven to suicide after the Daily Mail publicly outed her with the headline: “He’s not only in the wrong body … he’s in the wrong job”. This kind of sickening and violent transphobia is distressing and I can’t believe that 3 years after Lucy Meadows’ death this is still happening.
I am honestly out of words at this point, I’m so upset and repulsed by the repeated cases of transphobia not just by the Daily Mail but media as a whole. I want to say sorry to Lilly Wachowski for this happening to her and wish her the best with her journey. The only real way to end this article is to say the last thing I have left to say, fuck the Daily Mail!
