The mere presence of a transgender woman prompted a hate-filled tirade and bloody beatdown in Brooklyn, prosecutors said.
“‘We don’t like fa---ts on our block’ ... those are his words,” said prosecutor Carlos Santiago as he pointed at Mashawn Sonds seated at the defense table during opening arguments Thursday.
Sonds, 26, faces up to 25 years in prison for the alleged hate crime that left Kimy Hartman, 29, with brain damage on Bushwick Ave. on Oct. 12, 2014. Authorities said Sonds grabbed a two-by-four piece of Plexiglass and bashed Hartman. She was hospitalized for three weeks where she underwent major brain surgery.
Sonds was on the run until his arrest in February. A second suspect has pleaded guilty for his role in the attack.
