A trans rights campaigner was stabbed to death in Argentina yesterday (13 October). The body of Diana Sacayán was found in her apartment in Buenos Aires, stabbed numerous times in the chest and back. She was a high-ranking member in the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex group and leader of the Anti-Discrimination Liberation Movement. Police said the building manager had seen the door open to the apartment and immediately rang a friend of the victim. Upon entering the building, Sacayán was found lying in a pool of blood on the floor. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating the homicide. They suspect she was attacked by two people. In 2012, Sacayán was one of the first trans people to receive new identity papers from President Cristina Fernandez de Kircher after Argentina became the first country to allow people to change their official gender without approval from a doctor or a judge. She also pushed for public services to allocate 1% of their jobs to trans people, a policy adopted by Buenos Aires only a month ago. Tributes have poured in for Sacayán, with many calling her an ‘angel’ and a ‘guiding light for equality’. Justice for Diana Sacayán,’ one said. ‘Today has never been more important to join the fight.’ www.gaystarnews.com/article/trans-rights-campaigner-stabbed-to-death-in-argentina/
