The day when it is neither heroic nor even particularly note worthy to seek an authentic life, will be the day that this particular battle in human decency will be won. MLK said that the "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” I still pause that sexuality and gender identity are issues that resonate negatively for so many people. Me too.

I saw this with the LGB in society. OMG I have had a lot of LGBs in my family and all were accepted. As far as I know I am the only "T" but who knows? The more accepted the more people come out of the woodwork.

I just think the more people that see and speak with me the better it is because once they know someone its not as much of a mystery to them. There a LOT of people whom I have met that literally had no clue and now they have a real live person to refer to when they see or read about us in the media I always hope it was a positive experience for them. Patty I don't either but people tend to see what they want to see. My closet door is open and the light on. I stand up for everyone. But at 5'8 1/2 with small tits, long hair and the way I dress, it's kind of hard. I gave up a long time ago. What people see is what they wanna' see. I just stand up for everyone regardless.

the daily mail are usually the paper to write degrading stories that portray trans people in the manner they reference in this paragraph:
"The most striking thing about Flt Lieut Holdom is how far her androgynous elegance is removed from the cruel stereotype of a transgender woman. As a woman she’s neither confusing nor cartoonish; she is unmistakably feminine even if she was assigned a male gender at birth."
Don't get me wrong, I am pleased to see that they have tried to write a positive article, but if you look closely, you can see that they are doing it inelegantly and from a position of ignorance, and only because in England, you think twice before slating the royal family or their associates in the press. What is that paragraph trying to say? Its surprising she doesn't look like a caricature of a woman?
Still. Yes, its good to see that they didn't decide to take a different tack on it.

I don't know, it seems that the British tabloids enjoy taking cheeky shots at the Royals more than we would consider doing here in the states, though we love beating up on the President and his family here. I thought it was a pretty good article ant the Lt looked rather stunning in her flight suit.

Kira I agree with you. The Daily Mail is not known for quality journalism and is now also able to tap into the former readership of the News of the World. .. This is why I was so surprised that it was such a positive article. However royalty does rule and the press is very respectful of them and, in general, also of the Services, so this may explain the generous treatment. Having said this there was the inference that if you "pass", perhaps fit into the "gender norms" in terms of presentation and expression then, while it is surprising, you are ok... Unfortunately this is by no means unqualified acceptance. Still I can't help thinking that 2014 was, in general, a very good year for trans folk. It feels like we were more prominent and, in many cases, we received more positive and respectful coverage. I am often criticised for being too positive, but this works for me. So, on a bright and sunny Xmas morn in Oz, I wish you and all our friends a wonderful holiday season and a truly exceptional 2015. Safe travels Aisla
