Do we give words too much power?
My parents use the expression "That's so gay" to situations that are unnecessary. After hearing them say it so many times, I started using it without realising it. It slipped out when I was talking to my (then) girlfriend and she looked at me in horror, exclaiming, "That's so offensive! You shouldn't say that because it's offensive to gay people." I didn't know it was offensive at all so I was like, "Oh, okay, I'm sorry." I was confused because word gay has different meanings, like it used to originally mean being very happy.
Another time, I had been watching myself and replacing "gay" with "lame" but one time, it tumbled out of my mouth before I could catch myself. My (then) girlfriend scowled at me even though I apologised, she searched for a picture on her phone and shoved it in my face, it was this -
I told her that I understand what she means, I get the negative connotations, it's just taking me time to change the habit since I've been saying it for so long.
Mind you, this is the same person who enjoys calling her friends what she deems "affectionate" terms such as, "bitch", "slut", "cunt", even calls herself such terms and claims to feel empowered as a female for doing so.
Yet, when I was talking about my experiences where I witnessed a stranger call someone else a "cunt" on public transport, she gasps in horror and tells me I shouldn't say that word. I was like... really? Really?
So it's okay for YOU to call everyone else and yourself all the derogatory names under the sun, play it off as fun and games or giving you empowerment, yet nobody else is allowed to?
What kind of hypocritical double stand shit is that?
She also thought femboy and traps were "offensive" terms and in the same league as shemale, ladyboy and cuntboys. She says, why can't they just be called people?
I felt like saying, why can't you just stop calling yourself a pansexual and just say you have a sexuality?
It would be so much easier, wouldn't it?
What about the word, Queer? I have seen people gasp in horror at others who proudly call their gender identity queer or their sexuality queer, and the person rants and raves about how the word queer has negative connotations to people due to their experiences with past bullying. It's okay if YOU don't want to use it or associate anything to do with that word but it doesn't mean other people have to immediately stop using the term for themselves just because it offends you. People can adknowledge your hurt and pain but nobody should have to go out of their way so you can stay safely within your own little bubble.
This latest generation of politically correct folks who think they are above everyone else annoy me. Yup, that is my personal opinion.
The big bad world isn't going to accommodate to your incessant needs or avoid using terms you find offensive because guess what? People will say whatever the fuck they want, it's their right and you have NO right to tell someone what they can and can't say, what labels they can or can't use or what descriptors they can or can't use.
At the end of the day, we've got bigger problems to tackle. Equal sex rights, same-sex marriage, getting legal recognition of non-binary folks and doctors discriminating against their transgender patients is still a harsh reality many struggle with... just last week, my psychiatrist told me that a patient wanted to pursue top surgery and went to their GP to get a referral to see a surgeon, instead of getting a referral, the GP began quoting the bible at their patient. This is happening in 2015, folks. A fucking crying shame and I'm going to continue expanding this forum to be the best it can be.
We can't get those things done if we spend time arguing with each other over what terms we use and how offended one party is.
