I was having an email conversation with Evelyn when Laura my spouse wanted me to ask her what she thought about Bruce Jenner and remarked that Jenner will never pass and that she preferred Alexis Arquette as a better looking trans woman. Anyway, it's interesting that we can have these conversations at my home even though Laura is still very much a prude about transition issues and would prefer that it would all just go away. Here's what Evelyn wrote, I think it was very thoughtful. My thoughts I wrote to a relative "In my opinion the interview on Bruce Jenner’s coming out as a transgendered woman was a little hard to watch. He doesn’t pass at all as a woman which is a common problem with transwomen if the magic and genetics isn’t right, especially for late transitioners like Jenner. He’s 65 years old, and personally I don’t see the point. His voice hasn’t changed and isn’t helping either. With that said, I will say he is very brave, and since he’s currently the highest profile celebrity to come forward as transgendered, it’s actually going to help others and quite possibly save lives. The suicide rate among transgendered people both men and women (transmen) are pretty high, around 41% have attempted it. Not me I don’t have that level of gender anxiety or dissatisfaction (also known medically as “gender dysphoria”). The transgender movement will also benefit as the media brings more exposure and understanding to what being transgender is all about. It is said that this year 2015 is the year “transgender” will come into its own and a mass movement (an estimated 7% of the worlds population) can begin to gain acceptance in society. Similar to what the successful gay and lesbian rights movements have done in the past. Although in the past, LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender) rights movements never really brought attention to the T part of LGBT. With the interview receiving 16.9 million viewers in the US alone, not including scheduled online re-broadcasts - it’s a good start. It was 20/20’s best Friday night viewing in 15 years." Alexis Arquette is batshit crazy from what I've seen of her on tv. she goes off in a heartbeat and sometimes quite violently. And I'm not one to think that how pretty one is should have anything to do with whether they are a good trans role model or not. I feel like its good that a late transitioner is so well known, there are already a number of young ones in the spotlight.

I'm still kind of hoping that Bruce ends up being somewhat non-binary, it'd be good to have a well known nb in the media. Might make some people actually think...

V Typing on this phone is a pain in the I've seen a number of trans women start out pretty binary, but then over time, get more comfortable leaning more towards non-binary once they realize the overly feminine trappings, behavior and feelings just aren't worth it and not really who they are. I think some do it more for the therapists than themselves too, then once out from under that, they do their own thing.

I believe you are absolutely right about that, playing the girly-girl game to pull the wool over the eyes of the gatekeepers was quite common in the early phase of my own transition. One played the game to get to first and second base then steal third and slide in on home plate being who you really feel like being rather than what they want to make you. As for me, I stole all the plates and the ticket booth.

He’s 65 years old, and personally I don’t see the point. I would think someone that doesn't pass and is respected anyway is what I want to see happen more than anything. Whether that will happen based on what Jenner is doing, I have no idea. I don't think I'll pass even if I do transition, which is a good part of why I haven't so far. Despite that, I might when I retire, which will probably be around age 65, as it is for most people. A lot of things could happen between now and then, as I'm only in my late 30's. Hopefully, one of them will be this will all be a non-issue by then, or at least a lot less of one.

....he's 65 years old and I don't see the point...
Triggered hard on that.
Like we get to choose how we feel. Have to pass and all that. Transitioning for looks like a crossdresser might. Not transition if the world thinks we are not pretty or look like we are mixed. The dagger of sacrificing transition till we are old for family sake, due to cis pressure, family pressure, then get scorned for doing it late.
F... that.
Sighs..
Don't we transition because we must? Because we can't stand it any more? Change, accept, or die?
Lilipution threads.

Well, just heard it on the local news yesterday morning before Armegeddon hit here in SE LA that there is going to be a reality show in the works. I ain't going to say that I am right all the time but once a camera whore, male or female, cis or trans, binary or nonbinary, always a camera whore. Note that I am not using the word whore in a derogatory way but can't think of another description of it. I don't mind but how about a serious show about transgenders that are transitioning, those of us that aren't fully, those of us that span different areas. Welcome to the freakin' circus. I knew all the rag mags, the rumors and the interview was leading up to something. How about normal everyday people that have to work through transition? That have to explain to co workers why the change in appearance. Maybe those of us that are younger that have to explain to parents and then face all the bullshit outside of Hollywood. How about featuring a transwoman transitioning in a highly populated redneck area? OK Ativan. Now we need to get drunk because I don't see too much good coming out of this. On this I really hope I'm wrong but... I just don't think so. OK No offense but Bruce Jenner is not a normal everyday person. He was a star athlete. In the Olympics. Was in one reality show with the Kardashians (Never really could figure out what their talents really were other than seeking the spotlights). My resume" is not like that so newsflash Hollywood, there are normal everyday people that are transitioning outside of Fairytale land and still have to work jobs, raise families, lose family members and so on. Reality should mean real. OK now my little rant is over. Maybe not. Check in next week for the next twenty years for my real opinion. Sorry Shan. I just wish they would have interviewed trans all across the board. From Bruce Jenner to Joe or Josephina Blow from Idaho to Bailey Jay and her peers. All the good I can see from a reality show is just gauging people's reactions. But reactions to Bruce Jenner transitioning are gonna' be a whole lot different that Bruce Smith from Mississippi. Sorry for the rant everyone. Why not a reality show with Laverne Cox?

OK then I ain't Sorry. I don't know why but I just have a funny feeling about it. I will be happy as hell if it works out in our favor. I'm just so scared that it is gonna' go the other way though. Like I said Laverne Cox would have been a perfect person for a reality show. I would rather see some normal everyday person in a reality show about transitioning than Bruce Jenner. Everyone make fun of the Kardashians as it is for being celebrities for no reason, kind of like Paris Hilton. Hell at least Perez Hilton contributes and has a talent. I would love to see someone like Bailey Jay in a reality show about trans. Or Kimber James. Yeah they work in porn but... Hell we all have to make a living. And what about our brothers? Why leave them out? Why not have a reality show about the younger MTF and FTM that fell in love with one another? That I would watch.

Hell everyone loves strong and confident women. Doesn't it make sense that they would love and respect a strong transwoman? there are plenty of strong and assured transwomen. Check out Youtube. I don't have the courage to put myself up there. Hell Shan. I'm too chicken shit to put an actual photo of my avatar here even.

How incredibly horrific it must be, to be under that type of national microscope, every step, every move, every word, showing up on tv, online, or in a magazine. All those damn tough times that I know I've had (at almost that "end of life age of 65 :-/) to go through, struggling to keep my head above water, a smile on my face, knowing there were places like this where people understood. She did it with strength, courage, and dignity.
